An unfinished reading plan can become a quiet accusation. One missed day turns into a week, and the thought of catching up becomes heavier than the reading itself. Eventually, it feels easier not to open the Bible at all.
Luke 15 is not a story about completing a devotional habit. It is a story of lostness, return, a father’s welcome, and an older brother’s resistance to grace. Yet it helps us question the assumption that we must become presentable before we can return.
The younger son does not travel home with an impressive record. He comes with need. The father’s compassion meets him while he is still far away. The story invites us to notice the generosity of that welcome, without ignoring the harm of the son’s choices.
If shame has made you avoid Scripture, begin with a small honest return. Read a paragraph. Stay with a question. Ask for help understanding it. You do not need to pretend that your attention has been perfect.
A renewed habit grows through repeated returns. Today does not have to repair every missed day. It can simply be the day you open the book again.
